50+ Best Prompts for AI Character Portrait Generator (Anime, Realism & Cyberpunk)
Copy-ready portrait prompts grouped by style — 20 cinematic realism, 15 anime and fantasy, 10 cyberpunk, 5 duo shots — plus the formula that makes any of them repeatable.

A portrait prompt is not a wish list. It is a lighting plan, a lens choice, a wardrobe brief and a grade — written in the order a model reads them.
Below are 50+ prompts grouped by style, all written to that structure, plus the formula that made them so you can extend the list yourself. Every prompt assumes you already have a character reference loaded, because a prompt cannot hold a face — that is what the reference set is for.
What an AI character portrait generator actually does
Two things, and it is worth separating them.
It renders a high-detail frame where the face occupies enough pixels to carry likeness. And it conditions on a reference, so the person in the frame is the person you chose rather than a new invention.
Without the second part you are generating strangers. With it, prompts become a way to direct a specific person through different light and costume — which is the entire craft of portrait work.
The prompt formula: subject, wardrobe, light, lens, grade
Five slots, always in this order. Skip a slot and the model fills it with an average.
- Subject — who and what they are doing. "a woman in her thirties, looking off-camera". Not "beautiful woman".
- Wardrobe — garment, material, colour. "charcoal wool coat, collar up".
- Light — source and direction, the single biggest quality lever. "single window light from the left, dust in the air".
- Lens — distance and optics. "85mm, f/1.8, shallow depth of field" for portraits; "35mm" when you want the environment in frame.
- Grade — the finish. "warm film grain", "cool desaturated teal", "high-contrast black and white".
Two rules on top. Do not describe the face when a reference is loaded — it competes with the reference. And keep the medium words identical between renders in the same series.

- two characters sitting on a stone step, one leaning back, morning light, 50mm, soft warm grade
- a crowd of one identity repeated in different outfits, depth layers, night market, 35mm — use only after the face is stable
- two characters, one whispering to the other, tight crop, tungsten interior, 85mm, shallow depth of field
Note on duo shots: two identities in one frame is the hardest case. Render each character alone first, then combine — it is faster than fighting a two-reference render, and the result is usually cleaner.
💡 Want to try this yourself?
Paste any prompt from this list into the generator with three reference photos. Three images a day are free, no account required.
Run a portrait prompt now →How to combine these prompts with a face lock
The prompts above produce good light. They do not produce the same person, and no amount of prompt wording will. That requires references.
Load three to six photos of one person — front, three-quarter, profile, similar lighting. Then paste a prompt from this list and delete any sentence that describes the face. If you copied "a woman in her thirties with sharp cheekbones", cut it down to "a woman in a charcoal wool coat" and let the reference set the features.
Keep one variable per iteration. New outfit or new lighting, not both. Otherwise the render changes in two ways at once and you cannot tell which one broke the likeness.
Use the lens slot deliberately. Portraits at 85mm keep the head large and the identity legible. Switch to 35mm when you want the environment, and accept that the face will soften — that is physics, not a bug.
Match the tier to the use. Standard (2K) covers screen work up to full-width banners. Identity (4K) is for anything that will be cropped into the face or printed.
If you want the deeper explanation of why references beat prompts for identity, the FLUX character consistency guide covers the four locking techniques and when each one breaks.
FAQ
Do these prompts work without a reference image? They will produce attractive portraits of different people each time. For a recurring character, add a reference set — the prompt only controls the scene.
Why do my portraits look flat? Almost always a missing light source. "Soft light" is not a direction. "Single window light from the left" is. Specify where the light comes from and what it hits.
Should I include camera settings in every prompt? For portraits, yes — focal length changes framing and compression more than any adjective. Keep it to one lens and one aperture per prompt.
How long can a prompt be? Long enough to fill the five slots, short enough to stay coherent. Around 25–45 words is the practical range. Beyond that, competing instructions start cancelling each other out.
What aspect ratio is best for portraits? 3:4 or 1:1 for character work; 2:3 if the image is a book cover; 16:9 only for key visuals where the environment matters. Square keeps the head large, which protects likeness.
Can I use these prompts commercially? The prompts are free to use. The images are subject to your plan's licence, and you are responsible for holding rights to any real person's reference photos you upload.
Where to go next
Pick one prompt, one reference set and one character. Render the same prompt at three different focal lengths and watch how much the likeness changes — that single experiment teaches more about portrait prompting than another fifty prompts.
